Trauma:Aberdeen

While looking through a box of various stuff rescued from my mother’s attic, i came across three flyers for the now long and sadly defunct Aberdeen techno club;Trauma.
I spent many a night attending many memorable club and party nights up in sunny Aberdeen with the mad for it Trauma crew, seeing acts like EgeBamYasi,Tobias Schmidt,Steve Glencross,David Holmes Evil Eddie Richards,Twitch of Pure and Optimo fame.
For anyone else who remembers some great nights and good people….

A Tale Of Two Mixes

First up is a minimix from the bearded half(damn, wrong again) of Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip.Quite a funky little number.
Second is a techno mix from the mighty Surgeon. What i love about Surgeon’s mixes is how he isn’t afraid to throw in a few oldies here and there, too many dj’s play the newest thing, forgetting that a good old track is very often still a good track.

Justin Berkovi-Don’t Go

Continuing the mash up/remix theme for another post, Justin Berkovi did a beauty a while back.Tarting up the tight Electro-Pop classic of Yazoo’s Don’t Go,for a techno dancefloor.
Click on ‘Music-Shop‘ and you can download Don’t Go and another track for gratis.

Daft Punk-Alive-1997

You are looking at the cover of one of the best, and most important House/Techno live albums ever.
Doesn’t look like much does it?….
Never judge a book by it’s cover,or Lethal Weapon by Danny Glover for that matter. For on this disc is one of the most fervent and exciting performances that will ever grace your speakers.

Alive 1997,not to be confused with Alive 2007, is an excerpt from a Daft Punk live show from the Daftendirektour ,as performed at Birmingham’s Que Club,November 8th,1997.It has interpretations of various Daft Punk tunes including,Rollin’ and Scratchin’,Da Funk and Daftendirekt. The disc’s only fault is that it is indeed an excerpt.Clocking in at a tad over 45 minutes,it clearly fades out when there was still more of the show to be had,but hey, what a 45 minutes!
Unlike some electronic acts who opt for a more dj approach to playing live,Daft Punk lugged much of their studio out on the road. This meant they had far more control over the show and could more easily tailor the performance to the mood of the night..“Everything was synched up — the drum machines, the bass lines. The sequencer was just sending out the tempos and controlling the beats and bars. On top of this structure we built all these layers of samples and various parts that we could bring in whenever we wanted to”-Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk.

It’s a cracking set, sparkling all the way through with energy and passion, the two members of Daft Punk work together like one person, slicing loops in and out of the mix, adding effects ,whiplashing the eq and panning sounds. It really comes across that they themselves are having a whale of a time.Their grasp of the dynamics of their music is impressive, they tease the crowd with snippets of familiar tracks, then fade them out again, building tension before releasing it by bringing that snippet back in full,This is another live recording much like Banco De Gaia’s Live At Glastonbury where the impressively vocal crowd play an enormous part in bringing the whole thing to life.

This kind of raised the bar when it was released, people listened to it and realised what a properly live techno show could be like.I can’t think of many others that could play at this level,Orbital,The Chemical Brothers and the aforementioned Banco De Gaia and thats maybe about it

Thomas Schumacher-When I Rock

A tremendously stomping techno track from Thomas Schumacher, with fearsome Hip Hop style scratching and an awesome bass part.Best enjoyed loud, sadly the audio on this is really low.

Hardfloor-Acperience

Hardfloor are a German duo,Oliver Bondzio and Ramon Zenker,as well known for their remix work as their own music.Acperience is almost certainly their most famous track,i remember first hearing it at Pure ,the legendary Edinburgh club. For months i had no idea who it was or what it was called,my mates and i simply called it,’that track’,and everyone knew what you meant when you said it.The dj’s at Pure seemed to be the only ones who had it,i don’t remember hearing it anywhere else, they seemed to play it almost weekly. It always got a very enthusiastic reaction.
Didn’t seem to matter where you were or what you were doing in the club, when folk heard that kickdrum/hi-hat/bass intro, they were off onto the floor,by the time the woodblock and the high drone tone comes in,the floor was heaving, then that massive snare roll into the double cymbal crash and the place was well and truly jumping.
Acid House was never quite the same again.
Also worth a listen is Lost In The Silver Box,another of their 303 workouts.
Both from the album TB Resuscitation.

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip

Now i know i’m a little behind the times with this one but i just got one of the most interesting albums to come my way in a while ,’Angles’ by Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip.A refreshing and slightly odd hip hop/electro mix up with some really clever wordplay. There are also some industrial/techno influences going on.I love the fact that he makes absolutely no effort to hide his accent and anyone that can write “Thou shalt not judge a book by it’s cover. Thou shalt not judge Lethal Weapon by Danny Glover.” is alright by me.
You can listen to four of their tracks at their Myspaz, check out Dan Le Sac’s blog and read a couple of reviews here and here.
