Freddy Fresh-Annie On 1 Mix

Freddy Fresh is an astonishing dj,his mixes typically feature tracks from many genres, anything from Hip Hop to Techno,Trance to Breaks and a fair bit of Electro.Hailing from Minnesota,he is probably one of the few big name American dj’s from outside of Chicago or Detroit to be widely known and followed in Europe.
Fresh has released hundreds of records, owns and runs half a dozen or more record labels and still finds the time to write books on Hip Hop labels during the glory years.
This set was recorded for Annie Nightingale’s,Annie On 1 show, broadcast on Radio 1.Goldwaved to the max,I’m unsure of the date.but i think it must have been from around 1998,as thats when he did an amazing Essential Mix,and i’m sure this one is from soon after.

Monkey Mafia-Live @ Edinburgh Venue

Monkey Mafia were essentially Jon Carter, the Heavenly Sunday Social dj a Big Beat fanatic from Essex.Carter’s take on Big Beat included Dancehall and Ragga influences,Soundsystem imagery and big fat basslines.

They made a superb album Shoot The Boss.Highly recommended.
I have a pretty good short live set by them which you can download here . Recorded on 6/4/98 at The Edinburgh Venue and broadcast by Radio 1.This was recorded to cassette, transferred and tape hiss removed with Goldwave,It’s not perfect, but it’s listenable and it will give you a good idea what to expect from the album if you have never heard it.
Tracklist….
Long As I Can See The Light
Make Jah Music
Blow The Whole Joint Up
Work Mi Body
Lion In The Hall

Dj Food-Raiding The 20th Century

One of the most awesome dj projects ever undertaken, the Dj Food take on the history of the cut up has to be heard to be believed.Released online back in 1994 it caused a bit of a stir.Essentially it’s a sort of history of cut up music….stuff that people have looped, manipulated or mashed together,in the space of an hour!.
Dj food is usually assumed to be one person, when in fact over the years the persona of Dj Food has been several dj’s,Matt Black and Jonathan Moore of Coldcut fame,PC and Strictly Kev,amongst others.
The History Of The Cut Up is a weird trip through music in it’s broadest sense, the scope of the genres and cultural references represented are staggering, and all mixed together pretty much seamlessly, you can find a partial tracklist and download link here.
Highly recommended, doesn’t matter what kind of tunes you like, you will find something to interest you here,if only the skill of the turntablism.
