These guys are a firm fave,a Blues/Rock band that are probably most famous for being the band in the Titty Twister bar in Quentin Tarantino’s,From Dusk Till Dawn.Despite being on the verge of massive success a couple of times, opening for acts like INXS and writing top quality tunes, they were plagued by personnel changes and musical experimentation that didn’t go down well with their fans.
Their first album,’Tarantism’, remains their best methinks,Buy it here
Or have a listen to After Dark or marvel at the driving blues of Angry Cockroaches, both from the soundtrack of From Dusk Till Dawn.

Bjork-Radio 1 Dj Set
Published July 28, 2008 Music Leave a CommentTags: Bjork, Essential Mix, glastonbury, Goldwave, Radio 1
I have no idea where this Dj set from Bjork comes from, other than it was broadcast on Radio 1 some time ago.Us usual, recorded to cassette and then cleaned up and transferred to mp3 via Goldwave.
I don’t remember which show it was featured on,i don’t remember her doing an Essential Mix,although i could be wrong,i suspect its from the Beebs Glasto coverage, although, from what year i can’t say.
It’s pretty odd, although being from Bjork it would kind of have to be wouldn’t it!
Give it a listen,it’s fairly downtempo stuff.
Rip Her To Shreds
Published July 23, 2008 Music 5 CommentsTags: Blondie, Amy Winehouse, Ford Falcon, Pop
I fucking love Blondie, for me they are the quintessential Pop band, and i don’t mean Pop in the present day devalued sense, where you just have to sell a few records and get written about in the papers for being a drug taking lightweight.I mean Pop in the old school sense.Feel good music that makes you think your hammering down the road in glorious sunshine in a Ford Falcon with the windows down and the system up.
I particularly love Rip Her To Shreds,a barbed and twisted attack on some female…i would dearly love to know who.If anyone knows,do tell.
Just to put this in a historical perspective for younger readers its like the grandmother of the Amy Winehouse tune Fuck Me Pumps, only a million times more acidic
Roni Size/Reprazent-Live @ Maida Vale
Published July 22, 2008 Music 1 CommentTags: Dynamite Mc, glastonbury, Goldwave, Maida Vale, Onallee, Radio 1, Reprazent, Roni Size
Back to the old tape vaults with this performance from the mighty Roni Size. This is from the BBC Maida Vale Studios.Broadcast by Radio 1,and as im sure you know by now, transferred to mp3 and tidied up with Goldwave.
This is from round about the time they first headlined at Glastonbury, much like that Glasto performance the band are on fire here too.Sometimes im not very fond of mc’s,but Dynamite Mc is one of my faves as he knows when to stfu!.’Brown Paper Bag‘ is a highlight, with the interplay between Dynamite Mc ,and the remarkable voice of Onallee ,makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
..And i don’t quite know what to think of it.Hollywood book/game movie tie ins are notoriously bad.
Have a look at it here
Some of the look of the book would seem to be spot on,but there isn’t quite enough footage to tell for sure.Hopefully they haven’t turned it into a run of the mill action movie.Although on Hollywood’s past efforts we may well be disappointed.
Memory Tangle
Published July 15, 2008 Music , Written word 2 CommentsTags: Bobbi Gentry, Robert Frost, thats poetry
Memory is a funny thing, one thing gets linked with another.
As a child i was fascinated by the song Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbi Gentry, partly because its a ’story’ song, something i find it hard to resist, partly because it deals with death, partly because it deals with suicide, partly because it deals with a loss of innocence, but mostly because of the slightly bizarre way the lyrics switch back and forth between the tragedy of Billie Joe’s death and the everyday, almost humdrum lives of the characters in the song. It’s magnificently well written.
Something else which also used to fascinate me as a child was the poem ‘Out-Out’ by Robert Frost.Like Ode To Billie Joe it deals with pretty similar ideas, death, loss of innocence, everyday life continuing no matter what.In it’s own way it’s masterfully written.I first ran across it at school,in English class i was given some other poem to study,Out-Out was on the opposite page of the book, and was far more interesting,so much so,i no longer remember the poem i was meant to be studying and wolfed down the words of Frost instead.
I think part of the reason these are linked to me is that they were amongst the first things i heard/read that deal with death when i was at an age to actually understand the concept properly. Now i can’t hear the song without thinking of the poem.
Anyway,if Frost lights your fire, theres a good deal of his work available online
Freddy Fresh-Annie On 1 Mix
Published July 10, 2008 Music Leave a CommentTags: Annie Nightingale, Annie On 1, Dj, Essential Mix, Freddy Fresh, Radio 1
Freddy Fresh is an astonishing dj,his mixes typically feature tracks from many genres, anything from Hip Hop to Techno,Trance to Breaks and a fair bit of Electro.Hailing from Minnesota,he is probably one of the few big name American dj’s from outside of Chicago or Detroit to be widely known and followed in Europe.
Fresh has released hundreds of records, owns and runs half a dozen or more record labels and still finds the time to write books on Hip Hop labels during the glory years.
This set was recorded for Annie Nightingale’s,Annie On 1 show, broadcast on Radio 1.Goldwaved to the max,I’m unsure of the date.but i think it must have been from around 1998,as thats when he did an amazing Essential Mix,and i’m sure this one is from soon after.

I don’t know much about Future 3,other than they are Danish and they were active between around 1995 and 2001.This excellent short set was broadcast by Radio 1,recorded at Eurodance ‘97,transferred and cleaned up with Goldwave. They are quite downtempo, ambient almost, with a bit of Breakbeat thrown in,ah,you will just have to listen.
